Screensavers will only work for PC's with Windows 95 or greater. They will not work for Mac's. To save a screensaver, just click on it, and your PC will ask you what you want to do: save it to disk is the correct option. It will ask you which directory you want to save it to, select one and it will download automatically. These screensavers will install automatically after you have downloaded them and click on the .exe file where you have saved it. Then just go to your START button, select Settings and then Control Panel and follow the instructions.

The sound bytes on these pages are all WAV files, saved in 8 bit mono format to save space. The ones in the consoles SHOULD play automatically when you click the "start" button on the console image, AFTER the page has loaded completely (you can see a white strip on the console indicating the clip has finished loading). Most PC and Mac users will have no difficulty playing these whether you use Netscape or Explorer. Most problems arise when you don't allow the page to finish loading. If you have Windows Media Player as your default browser player the player will show as small version of that player. If your default browser player is Ouicktime, the player will be a bit narrower with a white strip above and below it. If you get no player image see "Plugins" in the section below. I have changed most audio links here to simple links, no consoles, to load faster.

If you still need help, email me and I'll try to figure it out with you.

If for some reason you find you need a wav player, these sites have free download of adequate programs.

The text files (interviews and such) are located in a separate directory and directly linked: simply click on the underlined text link and the file will open. If you want to save it to your hard drive, with a PC you would click the right mouse button and select "save file as". For a Mac you would simply drag it to your desk top.

The video clips on this site are in QuickTime format. You will need to have QuickTime to view them. You MAY need to download them to your hard drive before you can play them: they will only "stream" online if you have a Broadband Connection (hint: if your computer uses a modem and a phone line to access the web, you don't have Broadband).

PC: RIGHT click to download
MAC: drag to desktop to download

REMEMBER >>

If you don't have QuickTime or you have an older version that gives you an error message Click here to download the latest version free.

PC: RIGHT click to download
MAC: drag to desktop to download

Wallpapers are just .jpg images and will work for any PC or MAC. Downlaod as you would any file, then use your computer's Control Panel to make it the desktop image. (You can use any image as your desktop, even animated .gifs. Try it and see.)

Seeing the page:

All of the pages in this website have a very dark blue background with light blue or aqua lettering. If you have "images off" in your browser, you won't be able to see much on this site. The internet is very graphic: turn your images on to enjoy it. The light lettering on the dark background is better for your EYES which don't have to stare into a bright white background for hours at a time (like staring into the sun): your retinas do not come with built in screensavers :)
Also your screen resolution must be AT LEAST 800x600 pixels. It isn't possible to design a web page for all possible formats and resolutions. If you have a greater resolution, the page will look fine, just a bit more to the left of the screen. If you have it set to less than 800 x 600, the text and images will overlap and I am sorry there is nothing I can do about it. If you have it set this way due to vision problems, all I can recommend is to buy a larger monitor and then set the resolution to the standard 800 x 600.

Navigating:

First off, you need to have JAVA enabled in your browser for any of the navigation menus to work or even be visible to you. Make sure Java is enabled.

Browsers use little bits of code called "Plugins" to open certain files, such as audio and video files. Netscape seems to prefer Quicktime plugins for most audio files although it supports three or four others. Explorer preferentially uses Windows Media Player, but again you can choose others if you know how. If your browser has not been set up with the appropriate plugins you'll get a blank space or a box with an x (or a puzzle piece for Netscape users) in place of the embedded audio player. Often clicking on that space will redirect your browser to the manufacturer's site page containing the needed plugins and instruction for how to install them. In case it doesn't, I have included some such links here

In general, Explorer should not need "plugins" because it comes with default plugins already installed. See section on "default players" for help with Explorer problems.

To make the embedded players show OR to make the pop-up players "play":

I only know how to reset for Windows PC, Macs are on your own here.
In Windows, go to your START button (lower left of desktop screen), select "Settings" and then select "Folder Options". Click on the "File Types" tab and then use the scroll bar to scroll to the PROGRAM that you want to use as your default player for whatever file type (.wav, .mid., rm., ra., etc) that you are trying to access. With that program highlighted you will see a list below it that indicates which file types that program is already configured to open. If you don't see the file type you are looking for listed there, see the next paragraph for instructions. Click on "edit" and it will show you whether that program is set up to just "open" that file type, or to "play" it as well. You want it to say both Open and Play, and you want the word Play to be bold (that means it is the default player for that action). If it only says "open" then this is the sole reason your popups don't "pop up" and the player won't show on the web page, and we can fix that. Click "edit" again and copy the location shown in the white locator bar (complete with funny symbols, they are all needed) by selecting it, right click and copy. Hit OK and then select "new" and type in the action you want to add ("play" and paste below that the location you just copied. Click OK and then there is a button lower right that says "set default". With the new action you just created highlighted, press this button and it will make this program and this action the default for that file type. You're done, clock OK or Close and open your browser again. (In some cases you may need to rebook, but as long as the browser was not open, it shouldn't be necessary).

If you don't see the file type you are looking for listed there, you need to add it, but FIRST you need to copy and paste the exact address on your hard drive where this program is located. If there are already other file types listed there, just click "edit" and then "edit" again and copy the address in the locator bar there (right click, copy), since it already knows where the program lives on your computer for the other extensions. If there are no file extensions already listed for this program, you'll have to (edit, edit) "browse" till you find the location of the program, and then copy it (right click, copy).
THEN close those two popups (OK and Close) and select "new". Type in the function/action you want to add (example "play") and then paste in the location in the locator bar beneath that, click OK and then click the button that says "set default". Repeat the process for the action "open" since you want both to be there, but make sure "play" is the default action (bolded).

If you use EXPLORER:
At the top of the browser window where it says "File Edit View" etc pull down the one that says TOOLS and select INTERNET OPTIONS. When this window opens up select the TAB at the top that says ADVANCED. On this area scroll down until you see the section called "Microsoft VM" and make sure all three Java related buttons in this section have "checks" in them (this means they are enabled or turned ON), Then click OK or save or whatever. It will probably tell you to reboot or restart your browser to catch these new settings you have just changed. Do that and you'll be able to see what the rest of us can.

If you are using MOZILLA or NETSCAPE
Click on "Edit" and "Preferences."
Expand the "Advanced" group by clicking on the little triangle.
Click on "Scripts & Plug-ins" and make sure the box for "Enable JavaScript for Navigator" is checked.

If you are using MOZILLA FIREBIRD
Go to "Tools | Options" from the main menu.
Choose "Web Features" TAB.
Select "Enable Java".

If you are using OPERA
Go to "File" from the main menu.
Go to "Quick Preferences".
Select "Enable Java".

The .wav files linked to the Audio page and the little headset images will play in your own computer's default media player (it will "pop up" as soon as you click on the link). How fast they load will depend on your internet connection. Whether they play automatically or not depends on how your default player is set up: some set ups will require you to click the start button on your player. See section below on DEFAULT PLAYERS if you have a problem.
